This activity is meant to introduce students in grades 1-3 to the concept of bullying and what can be done to prevent it.
The only material necessary for this lesson is a copy of the book The Berenstain Bears and The Bully.
First I begin the discussion by brainstorming with the students to find out what they know about bullying. Then I would read the book to them,
After this, it is important to talk with the students about what happened in the story. Make sure they understand that when Brother and Sister Bear were preparing to fight the bully they were headed in the wrong direction. Ask them why they thought Tuffy was bullying other students and then brainstorm what other solutions might be. Depending on the students this could be done as a whole class or in small groups.
Finally, bring the class back together and discuss appropriate strategies for dealing with bullies:
- Walk away
- Tell a teacher or other grown up
- Don't be an audience
As a closing activity have students write (or draw - depending on abilities) a letter to a classmate telling them what makes them an integral part of the classroom. Explain that when we make others feel important we make it less likely that they are going to bully someone.
